Attorney Norma E. Ortiz has been practicing bankruptcy law in New York since 1988 and in New Jersey since 1994.  Norma has a broad and diverse background in the Bankruptcy field. She honed her skills in business bankruptcy Chapter 11 cases by serving as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Trustee’s Office, and clerking for the former Chief bankruptcy judge of the Southern District of New York. She joined her father’s law firm and expanded her bankruptcy practice to include personal bankruptcies.  Norma has over thirty years of experience representing small businesses and people in need of help through the use of   Chapter 7, Chapter 11 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases. Norma also helps those in need of representation in bankruptcy lawsuits and creditors in bankruptcy cases. Since graduating from New York University School of Law in 1987, Norma has championed the right of those in need of help to understand the power and relief bankruptcy can provide to a struggling business or family.

Norma believes strongly in helping others and has dedicated a lot of her time to teaching other lawyers and clients about the benefits of bankruptcy. She lectured on bankruptcy for the Bar Association of the City of New York, the American Bar Association, the Puerto Rican Bar Association, the Practicing Law Institute, Brooklyn Law School, and numerous other organizations. She has volunteered her time to serve as the Chair of the Bankruptcy Committee of the N.Y.S. Bar Association, as a member of the Chapter 11 Lawyer’s Advisory Committee to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Eastern District of New York, and serves as a member of the Second Circuit’s Committee on Civic Education. Norma has been interviewed by news networks New York 1 and CNN for her knowledge of bankruptcy law.
